Effective Relief from Jaw and Facial Pain
The temporomandibular joints, or TMJs, connect the lower jaw to the skull, governing all jaw movement related to chewing and speaking. The unique structure of this joint allows it to open, close, and move side to side. If the bite is not properly balanced, the TMJs must overcompensate to make the top and bottom jaws meet comfortably. Unfortunately, this constant strain can result in headaches, facial pain, and other agonizing symptoms. TMJ treatment , available at our Rockville practice, can help. Dr. David Allick provides custom treatments designed to relieve strain on the TMJs, and works with trusted local specialists to help patients achieve long-term solutions. Symptoms of TMJ
TMJ disorder is a complex condition that affects sufferers in many different ways. If you regularly experience migraines or aching neck muscles, you may not realize that TMJ disorder could be the cause. An imbalanced bite places immense strain on the TMJs, which can essentially cause a chain reaction of aches and pains near the jaw and beyond. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, we encourage you to mention them during your next consultation with Dr. Allick.
Treatment for TMJ Disorder
Dr. Allick asks 90% of his patients to undergo an MRI from their primary care provider before beginning treatment. This gives him a detailed understanding of each case, and allows him to create a personalized treatment plan that targets the location and symptoms of each patient. An imbalanced bite is often the result of nighttime teeth grinding, dental trauma, and other conditions. He employs several standard treatments for those suffering with TMJ disorder, including night guards, NTI appliances (Nociceptive Trigeminal Inhibition Tension Suppression System), and medication. Both night guards and NTI appliances are removable splints that are custom made to fit over your teeth and prevent clenching and grinding of your teeth. Night guards fit over all of your teeth, while NTI appliances fit only on the front teeth. Medication is used sparingly, but can include over-the- counter pain killers, muscle relaxants, and anti-anxiety prescriptions.
